Dr. Ellina Samantroy is a faculty at V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, Noida. She is also the co-coordinator of Centre for Gender and Labour at VVGNLI. She has a completed her M.A, MPhil and PhD in Sociology from Centre for Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her PhD thesis was on Changing Youth Culture: A study of Young Urban Professionals in Delhi. Before joining this institute she was Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Banaras Hindu University and has taught there for 6 years. She has also taught at Jamia Millia Islamia University at New Delhi.
 
Her research interests include Gender Statistics, Time Use Studies, Work and Family Life Balance, Gender, Work and Social Protection,Child Labour, Labour Regulation and International Labour Standards.
 
During her career at VVGNLI, she has undertaken research projects on themes like Reconciliation of Work and Family Life: An Exploration of Time Use Patterns of Working Women in Delhi & NCR, ILO Convention 181 : Issues and Challenges in the Context of Private Placement Agencies in India and Engendering Gender Statistics: An analysis of Gender Differentiated Statistics in India. Presently, she is working on a study “Understanding Women’s Work: Gendered Analysis of Women’s Household Work and Labour Market Participation in North East India” and VVGNLI-UNICEF study on “Child Labour Situation in India”.
 
She has been co-ordinating various training programmes on Research Methods in Gender issues in Labour, Empowering Women Organisers, Gender Labour Laws and International Labour Standards, Gender, Work and Social Protection, Leadership Development for Trade Union Leaders, etc. at the institute and outside.
 
She has published books, several papers and articles in peer-reviewed and reputed academic journals, chapters in edited volumes and articles in newspapers. Her book (co-authored) titled, “Globalisation and Social Change in India” was published in 2012 by Rawat Publications. The other books authored by her include Sociology of Indian Society and Social Problems for M.A. Distance Learning in Sociology published by Vikas Publishing House, New Delhi in 2011. Her recent publications an article on Regulating Private Placement Agencies in India: Issues and Challenges in the context of ILO Convention 181 (2015) ,Indian Journal of Labour Economics, Springer, India; “Regulating International Labour Migration: Issues in the context of Recruitment Agencies in India” (2014), Contemporary South Asia, Taylor and Francis: Routledge; “Engendering Labour Statistics: A Cross-Country Comparison of Gender Differentiated Statistics” (co-authored) (2014), Social Change, 44(1) Sage Publications, New Delhi, book review  on “Unpaid Work in the Global Economy”, Maria Angeles Duran Heras published in Asian Journal of Social Science (2014),Brill Publishing, U.K. and a chapter on “Capturing Unpaid Work: Labour Statistics and Time Use Surveys” (2015 co-authored) in an edited volume on Gender Issues and Challenges in Twenty First Century,Satyam Law International, New Delhi. Other publications include chapters in books namely; “Women Empowerment and Gender Inequality in Odisha: Issues and Challenges in the Context of Millennium Development Goals” published in an edited book Contemporary Odisha: Realities and Vision (2011) by Axis Books Pvt Ltd New Delhi and chapter titled “Structural Violence and Women: Indian Women Confronting Gender Violence” (2011) in Women in India: Trials and Triumphs edited volume published by VIVA books, New Delhi. Some of her works under publication are articles in various academic journals chapters in edited volumes and book reviews.
 
She has presented many research papers in both International and National Conferences including the 37th and 38th International Conference on Time Use Research in 2015 and 2016 at Ankara,Turkey and Seoul,Korea .She has undergone training on Labour Market Statistics at International Training Centre of the ILO at Turin,Italy.She has also attended the Writers Workshop as an expert at ITC,Turin Italy in 2016.She has also delivered special lectures at National Academy of Statistical Administration, (MOPSI) at Greater Noida, Arjun Singh Centre for Distance Learning, Jamia Millia Islamia and Malviya Centre for Peace Research, Banaras Hindu University. She has also delivered Video and Radio talks for National Institute of Open Schooling and radio talks for Gyan Vani, IGNOU.  She is also involved in reviewing and developing academic curriculum and e-content of various Universities and institutions in India.
